Phototherapy, with or without medication, for the management of acne
Ideal even during periods with plenty of sunshine.
What is photodynamic therapy?
Phototherapy is the most safe and effective strategy for acne treatment. The effectiveness of this treatment method against pathogenetic mechanisms of acne has been demonstrated through many research studies.
Phototherapy is an absolutely safe treatment option for summer and during periods with plenty of sunshine, a really important and encouraging advantage, as in Greece there are many sunny days during the year.
How does phototherapy works
To achieve clinical effect and destroy the bacteria, the clear, visible and invigorating light spectrum, which is responsible for the presence of life on our planet, is applied on the affected tissue to manage the presence of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and inflammation.
For the reaction, three main components are required:
- Light (blue, red)
The blue wavelength (415 nm) is absorbed by porphyrins (such as coproporphyrin III, uroporphyrin and protoporphyrin), offering significant advantages:
- the production of singlet oxygen (¹O2) and other free radicals within acnes, resulting in its destruction
- the activation of the organism’s defensive leukocytes.
At the same time, the red wavelength (633 nm):
- stimulates immunoregulatory mechanisms
- minimises the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines
- has anti-inflammatory action.
In the case of severe cystic acne, phototherapy is combined with the local application of a photosensitiser (photodynamic therapy, PDT), aiming at inducing the effectiveness of light on acne lesions.
Phototherapy is ideal for people who should not, cannot, or do not want to receive medicines, adolescents and adults, independently of acne severity and skin type.
